Responsibilities

Property Tax Collection and Distribution

  • Mail property tax statements to taxpayers.
  • Collect all real and personal property taxes for the county adn other local taxing entities.
  • Disburse the collected funds to the appropriate taxing authorities (e.g., school districts, cityies, special districts)

Financial Managment

  • Act as the county’s chief banker, receiving all county revenue
  • invest excess county funds safely and prudently, balancing liquidity and yield, to generate a return on investment.
  • Maintain accurate account of all county funds, disbursements, and investments

Delinquent Tax Collection

  • Conduct an annual tax lien sale to collect unpaid property taxes.
  • Manage the process of holding tax lien certificates and, after a period of time, a treasurer’s deed auction for properties with unpaid taxes.

Public Trustee Duties

  • Perform the duties of hte Public Trustee, which primarily involves processing documents related to foreclosures and the release of deeds of trust. Ensure legal rights are protected during a foreclosure for both borrower and lender.

All county treasurer’s office activities are specifically mandated by the Colorado Constitution and State Statutes.
